Emotion + facts = caring strength
âThe best kind of leader I know is one who can give the emotional connection and add the facts to it. Thatâs a scenario that adds up to caring strength.
âWhich of these is the toughest group to whom youâve had to deliver bad news: your employees, your senior leaders, or your clients?â JT asked them.
âIâm not sure itâs harder because of one audience or another; I think itâs hard anytime thereâs change.â Ann stated matter-of-factly. âIt seems like no one really wants to accept change.â
Al disagreed. âItâs probably more difficult for the senior leaders knowing that theyâre the ones who made the decision to take that route. Whereas when we give bad news to our employees, they realize that the decision didnât come from us. It came from higher up.â
âWe must still take ownership,â Andrei commanded. âOh yes, I still take ownership. Iâm not saying thatâ¦.â
âThatâs like giving someone else the blame,â Andrei insisted.
âIâm not saying give someone else the blame; Iâm saying when itâs time for layoffs, it wasnât me that made that decision to lay off ten percent of our people,â Al stated defensively, his tone matching Andreiâs. âItâs hard when you have to deliver something you donât even believe in.â
JT jumped in to shift the direction of the discussion, âA healthcare client of mine was having a strategy meeting because the very next morning they were going to announce cutbacks in employee healthcare coverage, pensions, and benefits.â
âWeâve had to do that,â Al interjected.
âYou have my profound sympathy,â JT said sincerely. âI wasnât brought in for their meeting; I just happened to be on-site for a coaching session. But someone saw me and asked me to help them formulate a plan. To get things rolling, I had them take me to the space where theyâd be delivering the information.
âWe went to the five-hundred-seat auditorium to take a look at it. It was a very tall stage with a podium. What do you think I said first?â
âGet rid of the podium,â several people answered in unison.
âYes, I said, âdonât think for a minute youâre going to deliver bad news behind a podium. Not going to happen.â Because with a stage that was up really high, this is how it looked.â JT bent over as though looking down on something little. âWeâre cutting your healthcare coverage, little people.
âYou have to think about the setup of your room, even a room like this, so it doesnât become a distraction and work against you.
âThe next topic of debate was how to stage the three people speaking: the CEO, CFO, and the HR manager. I asked how they were going to handle it. They said each would walk out onto the stage to present their part.
âI asked where the others would be standing while one was presenting. When they told me the others would be behind the stage curtain, I told them no.
âWhy do you think I encouraged them to all be on the stage at the same time?â
âYou need it to look unanimous,â David said.
